Sleep Apnoea

A potentially dangerous condition, Sleep Apnoea can now be addressed and treated more efficiently and effectively than ever. Usually during sleep, muscles control the tongue and soft palate to keep the upper airway open. If these muscles relax, the airway becomes narrower, often causing snoring and breathing difficulties.

If these muscles completely relax, the airway can become blocked, which can prevent you from breathing. This is known as obstructive sleep apnoea. As a result of this blockage, you will suffer from a lack of oxygen alerting the body to wake up.
Though you may not remember each waking event, you will suffer from a severely disrupted sleep.

A few common symptoms of sleep apnoea:

:: Choking or gasping during sleep to get air into the lungs
:: Loud snoring
:: Sudden awakenings to restart breathing
:: Waking up in a sweat during the night
:: Feeling unrefreshed in the morning after waking
:: Headaches, sore throat, or dry mouth after waking
:: Daytime sleepiness/lethargy

Treatment for this condition is available. Should you experience any of the above symptoms we suggest that you contact our practice for further investigation.
